Gateway Battery Energy

Storage System

EDP Renewables Canada Ltd. (EDPR) and Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. (Samsung) are working together to submit a proposal to develop the Gateway Battery Energy Storage System (Gateway BESS). This project will be located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario as part of the Independent Electricity System Operator Long-Term 2 Request for Proposals.

Gateway BESS will hold up to 200 MW/1600MWh of battery energy capacity. The project will enhance grid reliability by storing electricity during off-peak periods and releasing it when demand is highest, optimizing the use of renewable energy resources and supporting a cleaner electricity system.

Gateway BESS will have a project footprint of approximately 10-12 acres and will be in a M2 Industrial zoned area within the Subject Property. The project is optimally located within commercial (project access road) and industrial (BESS facility) zones, adjacent to transmission lines and a substation.

Need for the Project

Ontario’s energy demand is projected to increase by 75% over the next 25 years, resulting in an energy supply shortfall. BESS facilities help reduce grid costs, improve efficiency, and store excess electricity for local use when needed most, an essential solution to Ontario’s increasing electricity demand.

Project Timelines

Below is the preliminary timeline for the proposed project. Please stay tuned for updates on the upcoming public meeting.

Energy That Fits In

BESS requires a small footprint, produces no direct air emissions, and operates quietly with appropriate sound mitigation. Traffic is limited after construction, with construction for the project expected to last about 1 year. The compact, low-profile design allows BESS to blend into existing sites with minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
